Sorry for the lack of posts lately...

Lots seem to be going on though or at least getting resolved. Spence is staying I guess, he was honest and admitted he didn't get offered the job. I'm a little surprised, I thought he was gone. I mean why wait to announce if you have already decided to stay?

We have got some good commits this week. As a whole, this could turn out to be our best class yet. Impressive. Hell, at this rate we may be able to actually out talent everyone on our schedule, even if we can't outcoach them. They are doing good in my opinion at developing the talent. I never thought I would see that at Clemson.

Unfortunately, Auburn is going to be an uphill battle. Other than Va Tech, I think this is the best team we have played all year. They are going to have to come out like they play FSU and in past years SC to win. They can do it, I just don't know they will.

Somewhat of a surprise, looks like Vincent will play. Could be bittersweet however. If he gets convicted he may be out the door. I guess its justified if thats your policy. Why not give the kid one last game?

Everyone seems to be wanting to kick the Gamecocks since their down. I won't and I don't think for a minute they will stay down. Every year it comes down to a handful of plays making or breaking your season. Sometimes its just luck, it either goes your way or it don't. Debatable if it went the Tigers way or not. Didn't go yours for sure. I think things will certainly turn around and you guys definitely deserved a bowl more than many of the teams that got one.

MERRY CHRISTMAS BRO!

I hope all is well. Hope you have the best Christmas possible!

It doesn't matter, whats done is done in both cases...

Paul Johnson actually shed a little more light on it. Tenuta told him up front he was not staying as he already had another job (LSU). This will of course be after the bowl game. He says Wommack runs the exact same defense as Tenuta. Also, they are keeping most of Tenuta's assistant coaches. Wommack agreed not to break them up. Most others wouldn't agree to this wanting to bring in their own staff. He also just likes the man's attitude. Nothing is a sure thing, only time will tell. He is signed for minimal money to a one year contract.

I don't think you will hear much on Spence. Suprisingly this may mean he is gone. Bowden hinted to it in that he said Spence would not announce his move from Toledo until after the bowl. On paper, he looks really good. His balanced attack in terms of yardage is really good on paper. However, stats don't add up to wins, obviously. Timing and adaptability of play calling is not very good. You would have to watch all our games to see this. As we have and Fulmer has not.

I did however gain allot of respect for the man when I found out he thought he was terminally ill with lung cancer for the entire season. Luckily, he just got test results back confirming it was only a lung infection, curable with antibiotics. He wouldn't even go back to the doctors until after the season. You have to respect the guy for doing what he did under those circumstances.

Who knows?

Maybe Wommack will do well. I doubt it though. Just for the record, our LB corps didn't get any better this past season without Wommack. They played about the same as they did in 2006 when Wommack was there. One huge difference though, Jasper Brinkley was injured after the second game of this past season. I can guarantee you that our defensive woes had nothing to do with Wommack leaving. Trust me on that one..

I haven't heard much else about Spence. What have you been hearing? I think he probably just wants a little raise. A lot of the Clemson fans on the message boards feel the same as you do about Spence. So do the Tennessee fans. I haven't saw one post from a Tennessee fan that is happy about the interest in Spence. They think they can do far better. You know how the fans of schools like that are though. I've said enough about Spence in the past, so you know my view of him. Wouldn't be a big loss in my opinion. Well, except for recruiting maybe.. I really think he will stay put though.

More from me on Spence...

I'm not going to ensure that him leaving will be wonderful. But I'll say this, we still need a change. Not a complete overhaul in firing Bowden but a change. It would have been hard to outright fire Spence. In short, did we have a quality win this year? I just can't think of one. Even the teams that beat us were not that great. We should have beat every team on our schedule hands down.

Don't get me wrong, our offense improved dramatically, even though with two great running backs the running game was not very good. Most of this can be contributed to Harper. Certainly not play calling. It was very suspect at times. Sometimes our play calling just makes no sense. Spence has never been able to adapt to what a defense is doing at halftime. He has a hard time adapting after losses also. If it works, it works. If it doesn't it doesn't. Unfortunately, what he lacks is the most important qualities in a Coordinator. The ability to adapt when things are not going good to win games.

Maybe, just maybe, this could finally be the change we need. It could go either way, if it happens at all that is.

Official announcements on Spence and Wommack..

Sorry bro, I just don't believe anything until I see the team announce it, not even from newspapers which you actually brought to my attention about the unreliability of them. But both teams officially announced them finally. Bowden even says its pretty serious with Spence. Heres my thoughts on both (I did a little research on Wommack).

Wommack:

2007-PresentOutside Linebacker CoachSouthern Miss.
2006Linebacker CoachSouth Carolina
2005Secondary CoachSouth Carolina
2002-2004Defensive CoordinatorArkansas
2001Secondary CoachArkansas
1998-2001Defensive CoordinatorSouthern Miss.
1994-1998Secondary CoachSouthern Miss.

Wommack had also been promoted to Southern Miss. DC this year. In 2002 Arkansas won the SEC West. So he pretty much had the same achievements as Herring. The guy seems to get moved to DC everywhere he has gone except South Carolina. So someone is seeing something in him. Nutt saw something he liked. Southern Miss. sees something they like. Johnson sees something he likes, I'll trust his judgement on that. Spurrier saw something he didn't like, I trust his judgement on that he was not for SC. Not being a smartass but did your defense improve without him this year? Also, at least on Rivals the fans are not upset on getting rid of Tenuta, if that is indeed the plan or Wommack being hired, no mention of it in fact.

Spence...

Looks like he may leave. If he leaves it could be due to the new contract. Maybe its the money in that he didn't get a big raise. If he doesn't get more money now and leaves it only stands to reason they are letting him go. I'm not convinced TDP and Bowden are completely satisfied with him. I doubt Sweeney will run the exact same offense, noone does. I know that Clemson and other teams are high on Sweeney, they try to get him every year. Maybe it is time he stepped up and gave it a shot as OC. However, I certainly don't agree that there are no other ones out there. They don't have to be out of a job to be available. Clemson just has to be a better opportunity than where they currently are. Bobby Bentley maybe? Just a thought and supposedly Bowden has him on a shortlist when he has an assistant coach opening. If Sweeney does get the nod, we will still have an opening. Just a thought.

I don't know bro..

I hope Johnson doesn't hire Wommack. Big mistake in my opinion. The link I provided says it was a deal and all of the GT fans seem to think so as well. I gotta tell you, they are not very happy at all. I hope he knows what he is doing..

The Spence thing has been all over Rivals. I don't think they make an official announcement if a coach is just interviewing for a job though. He probably just wants more money anyway. It says in the article about about Spence in The State that Tommy is prepared to hand the duties over to Dabo Swinney if Spence does leave, but who knows? I wonder if Swinney would change up the offense or run the same thing Spence runs? Who would you like if Spence were to leave? I don't know of any good O-coordinators on the market to tell you the truth. Swinney may be the best option depending on what type of offense he would run.

Spence leaving???

Well of course I just don't buy into things until an official annoucement is made. I'll say this though. Most are not happy with him. His play calling improved this year but its still suspect at times. If it happens, it could turn out as a blessing or certainly bad in the long run. Most experts and fans alike think our offense should be more effective than it has been with the players we have. I mean, we didn't really run the ball that well in the second half of the season. JD getting minimal carries. You know we should have been able to run the ball all day on you guys. We were not very successful running it on you. We could only score 3 points on Ga Tech?

I'm just glad its Spence and not VK. Who will we get to replace him? Interesting.

I dunno...

I guess I don't have to tell you Ga Tech will be my second favorite team now. I'll tell you what is going to happen. Quite a while ago, college football went through a change. Spurrier in fact put the icing on the cake for the changes. He did what no other coach had been successful at, though a few had tried. He passed the football to win games. Before that, the pass was used on long yardage and keeping the defense honest kind of thing. But primarily to win, the offense was based on running the ball. He changed that by using the pass as a primary basis to win games, with much success. Very exciting to watch, every new coach wanted to do it. The option all but went away.

Now, Paul Johnson will bring the option back to college football. Fans now days don't even know what the option is. They all just think its a dirty word. Option? Oh my god thats outdated and won't work. Some coaches have started to ease back over to it, unknowingly I might add using the spread offense to run. Which I am not a fan of. I think its Gimmicky and requires other than ordinary athletes to work.

Paul Johnson's offense is an updated version of the traditional option. Its amazing to watch running plays executed that perfectly. Hes going to end up changing college football again.

As far as Tenuta, he finally made a statement on the matter. He was certainly an asshole. When asked about Paul Johnson being at practice he said "he was here"? He also said plainly he hasn't been in any talks about staying or more importantly leaving the team yet. The reason is very logical, noone wants to distract them for the bowl game. I have also read that he doesn't get involved with recruiting. Certainly a negative.

As far as a new DC being hired. Impossible, why? Paul Johnson cannot hire anyone until after the bowl game. NCAA rules state you must have all coaches for the bowl game. In other words there will be no openings until after the bowl game is played. Thats probably why there is no mention of this on Rivals. It just can't of happened, yet.

But I trust his judgement. He knows something we don't if he is hiring Womack. Ga Tech will consistently have the best running defense in the nation. Why? Because they will practice against the best rushing team in the nation. Hard to win games passing the football because you can't run. You take away a teams ability to run the ball and its a tall task to win after that.

Spurrier evidently chose wisely getting the best available DC out there. No surprises there.

What in the hell is Paul Johnson thinking???

He gets rid of JohnTenuta and hires former Gamecock LB coach Dave Wommack as his DC? I thought it was a joke at first then someone posted a link. Wommack wasn't even good enough to coach our LBs.. lol. He was fired by Houston Nutt in 2004. Then he came to Carolina in 2005 and was fired by Spurrier in 2006. He has since been coaching LBs at Southern Miss. I have heard that Tenuta was very hard to work with but damn. It's gonna be weird watching GT with a good offense and a bad defense. I bet the GT fanbase has exploded.. lol. Link below.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/gatech/stories/2007/12/20/techDC_1221.html

Didn't see this one coming..

Apparently Rob Spence is interviewing for Cuttcliffe's old job at Tennessee. Spurrier started a chain reaction with the whole Duke thing didn't he.. lol. Nah, Spence probably just wants more money. He's thinking, "Hey, it worked for Tommy." It's just an interview probably no big deal. Who would you want as a O-coordinator if Spence did leave bro?
There are also rumblings about Dabo Swinney, Ron West, and Brad Scott. Unlike the Spence situation, these are just message board rumors right now. I'm hearing that Swinney and West may go with Rich Rod to Michigan and Brad may go back to FSU if Trickett leaves. Again these are just rumors right now but the Spence thing is true, he is supposed to travel to Knoxville tomorrow for the interview. Big fat Fulmer and Spence would look like the number 10 standing beside each other on the sidelines LOL.

Terps hate to see Ray Rychleski go..

This is what the Maryland fans had to say about Ray Rychleski on a message board:

"I'm sad to see him go. Since he's been here, our kicking game has been very solid. He's presided over: A punter who was named All-ACC all 4 years of his career (Adam Podlesh) -A kicker who got to Maryland unable to consistently hit PATs and left school as the ACC's all time leading scorer (Nick Novak) -A two time first team All ACC punt returner (Steve Suter) -A KR who finished in the top 10 nationally in kick return yardage last year (Josh Wilson). Our kick coverage is also typically very solid. As you said, he's done a nice job with our TEs too. He'll do well for you guys."

"I think it was a good hire for you guys. He has supposedly always wanted to be in the SEC and wants the chance to be a HC down the line. I think I read somewhere where he had an All ACC player on ST his first 6 years here. He also had Vernon Davis and Joey Haynos who was All ACC last year as TEs so he has done well with them as well. I think we also hold the longest current streak in NCAA without a kick/punt being blocked fwiw. He is also a very nice guy and we wish him all the luck in the world."

"You guys will love him. Not that I know a lot about the top special teams coaches nationally, but I'd have to think he's in that group of the 10-15 best."

Sounds like a keeper to me!

I really think VanGorder is what Carolina needed..

I'll start with a few posts about him on a message board from UGA fans. If anyone should know about him it would be the Dawgs:

"Presuming it is final, very good hire. You will be pleased with the defenses he fields, particularly the attitude. He is an excellent DC. Congrats."

"Good get. He'll light a fire under your D's ass."

"Definite upgrade for the Cocks."

"Van Gorder is a bad ass DC. Congratulations SC. I like our current guy, Martenzez, but our defense hasn't been the same since he left."

Now here's some of the hard facts about him while he was at UGA:

---VanGorder's tenure (2001-2004) as Georgia's defensive coordinator is considered one of the most successful since Erik Russell left in 1980.

---In his four seasons as defensive coordinator at Georgia, VanGorder helped the Bulldogs post a 42-10 record, capture one SEC title and two SEC East Division championships, win three consecutive bowl games and post three straight top 10 finishes in the national polls.

---VanGorder was honored as college football's top assistant coach in 2003 with the Frank Boyles "Assistant Coach of the Year" award.

---During his final season at Georgia in 2004, the 10-2 Bulldogs were ranked seventh in the final national poll as VanGorder's defense finished the season ranked eighth and ninth in scoring defense.

---In 2003, VanGorder's Bulldogs defense ranked third nationally in scoring defense, fourth in total defense and sixth in passing defense.

---The 2002 season saw VanGorder's defense not only lead the SEC in scoring defense, but finish fourth nationally. The Bulldogs allowed only 31 points during the final seven games of the season on their way to eventually winning the Sugar Bowl and finishing third in the final national poll.

---During VanGorder's first year as Defensive Coordinator at Georgia in 2001, the Bulldogs allowed just 18.9 points per game, ended up fifth in rushing defense and ranked 17th in scoring defense.

---Van Gorder was named the seventh recipient of the Valvoline Southern Sports Tonight "Assistant Coach of the Year" in 2001.

---During his Georgia tenure, six of VanGorder's players were selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft, including defensive tackle Jonathan Sullivan, safety Thomas Davis and defensive end David Pollack in the first round, and safety Sean Jones and linebackers Boss Bailey and Odell Thurman in the second round.

Sounds pretty convincing to me. They say that he is a very intense guy that is not afraid to get in a player's face and yell. We just weren't getting that with Nix. I think the emotion and intensity on the sidelines will motivate our defense. See the pic above.. lol. What do you think about him bro?

I hate it for those guys...

Its a testament to the fact that players really do not just get passed at Clemson to play football as some would say. Bowden said they did everything possible to try and help them. Tutors and what not. Looks as if Courtney Vincent is going to get crucified. I guess thats the price you pay to have a disciplined team.

Sounds like you guys got a good DC coordinator. I'm glad because it would have been awful for you had you got Herring. I remember when he was at Clemson and his defenses were not very good. Certainly not better than Nix. Huston Nutt agrees, why else would he have choose Nix? Why isn't Petrino keeping him? I mean Nix is getting paid well, not like they didn't have the money.

I still can't find anything on Paul Johnson firing Tenuta or his search for a new DC. I go to the Ga Tech website and message board everyday and nothing. I would have thought it would be all over the message boards. Also, hes one of the better DC's out there. If I were him I wouldn't listen to other people on him being difficult to work with. I would make my own judgement. Paul Johnson seems like an offensive kind of guy and I doubt he would be working with the defense that often. I guess if he is hires Herring we will know. If he does keep Tenuta, its my opinion you can look for Ga Tech to be in the National title spotlight sooner rather than later. Johnson is already doing pretty good in recruiting in what, two weeks? I have to admit, I am excited to see what he does there, I just like watching his teams, except when they play Clemson of course, lol.

Sounds like you guys got a good Special Teams coach. Its a luxury that allot of teams don't have having an extra coaching slot because you don't need an offensive coordinator. Should work out great for you guys.

DC post coming tomorrow..

I'll write a little bit about VanGorder tomorrow. I will say that I think it is a great hire.

What do you think about Billie, Capote, and Watkins being ineligible for the bowl game? If Vincent is suspended, that would be all of Clemson's starting LBs. Bowden has talked about kicking Vincent off the team after the court hearing. Must have been worse than we thought..

I knew it was only a matter of time for Billie though. They say that the boy is dumb as a brick.. Dumbass.. lol. Nah, I really do hate that, especially for Billie and Watkins considering they were Sr's. But I guess they have no one to blame but themselves..

Brian Van Gorder named DC!

Former UGA DC and current Falcons LB coach named new USC DC. I'll try to post more on him tonight after I get off work..

No new news on the DC..

We have found a special teams coordinator. Ray Rychleski was hired yesterday. It looks like Fred Chatham is out. I like the hire. He was coaching at Maryland. During his seven-year span with the Terrapins, Maryland had zero punts blocked, the longest current streak in Division I-A football. Conversely, Maryland has blocked 22 kicks and returned eight kicks for touchdowns during that stretch. Sounds good to me..

Funny you brought up Paul Johnson's DC. I'm hearing he is going after none other than Reggie Herring. I was looking at his track record after Clemson and it looks pretty good to me. He left Clemson for the NFL. After a couple of years in the NFL he went to NC ST. and spent the 2004 season there where they had a very good defense. After he left NC ST he went to Arky and that defense should speak for it's self. They won the SEC west in 2006. I would be happy with the hire and apparently Paul Johnson would to. Now does that mean he is better than Tenuta? No, I've heard a nice little bit of info about why we are not pursuing Tenuta and I'm sure it's the same reason Paul Johnson didn't want to keep him on staff. They say he is one of the worst coordinators to work with in the league. I'm sure Johnson nor Spurrier want any BS to put up with and I don't blame them. Back to Herring, click this link and read the first line of the bio.. lol.
http://clemsontigers.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/herring_reggie00.html

Yea, ole Rich Rod did WVU dirty. I don't think Tommy Bowden would leave the ACC for a Big East job. If he was going to leave it would be for a SEC job, a bigger one than Arky and I don't see that happening any time soon. I am hearing a Bowden named for the WVU job. Tommy's brother Terry is coming up a lot. Don't be surprised if he is the next HC for WV.

As FSU, ESPN is reporting that those players will be suspended for the first three games of next season. Is it time for Papa Bowden to hang it up?

And as for Clemson moving to the SEC... Big smelly pile of dog dookie.. lol.

More to TO DO about DOO DOO......

I have been hearing Bowden's new contract only includes a $5oo,ooo buyout. Have you heard anything? I can't find a single thing where the terms have been released. If this is the case, thats not very much of a commitment, interesting...

A West Virginia fan will likely assassinate Rich Rodriguez, LOL. Now he is trying to get out of paying the 4 million dollars, thats just awful on his part.

Anymore news on a new DC?

Also, I read on ESPN where Navy's DC stayed at Navy. I thought Johnson brought him with him. Evidently he did not.

Wow, that means the contract has not been signed. Think its possible Bowden would consider a move to West Virginia who would have a buttload of money to pay out? Probably not, but an interesting thought.

My god, poor poor FSU. As many as 20 starting players suspended for the bowl game for cheating, wow. I hear also they could possibly miss the first 3 games of next season, wow.

Also, I keep forgetting to mention this. Spurrier really got the last laugh on Tenn. this year. It was no secret he streamlined Duke's coaching search. Another good smack in the face to big fat Fulmer, lol.

Talks really seem to be heating up on Clemson moving to the SEC. Personally I don't see it happening. But we know all things are possible.

On a side note....

As you know I didn't buy into the Bowden to Arkansas deal.

However, if he hadn't got a contract extension, I could certainly see him going back to West Virginia. Interesting to think about how things might have turned out. Also, had Bowden gone to Arkansas, would Petrino have been our next coach? Much Much better situation for him than going to Arkansas. Hell, we even had the players he would need for his offense, certainly he does not at Arkansas.

I don't know much about Johnson...

I would guess that Spurrier is big on him so I would trust his judgement.

Herring I do know. We were not satisfied with him. It also looks like Nutt nor Petrino were satisfied with him. Nutt obvously thinks Nix is a better choice in the SEC. It only stands to reason Arkansas is willing to let him go. So I'm not big on that one. Honestly I don't think Spurrier is going to settle on him. Just my opinion.

Hopefully you guys get a shot at Tenuta. Why not? If Johnson really intends to let him go. Which won't happen until after the bowl game. If he lets him go in my opinion its a mistake. If he gets let go, fork out the money and get him!

On Foster, I think now I see what may have happened. Maybe Foster was considering a move to SC. You know what I think happened? He saw the writing on the wall with West Virginia. If West Virginia doesn't go after him hard now they are stupid. Seeing as how they will get 4 million from Michigan on RR buyout they have allot of money to offer.

Personally, I would have kept Nix. But I have no doubt you guys are going to get a good one.

News on the DC front..

Two big names swirling right now. The one that I hear the most is MSU DC Ellis Johnson and the other is Arky DC and former Clemson guy Reggie Herring. I would honestly be happy with either one. Both have had good defenses (especially Johnson) with lesser talent than Carolina and I think either would be a step up from Nix. I would rather have Tenuta but I'm hearing that these two were next on the list after Foster. What do you think about these guys?

Saturday, December 15, 2007

Oh, I like having something to talk about...

Its a big difference between an argument and a discussion. Just because we disagree doesn't mean we are arguing. I can't help it if Spurrier doesn't like black people, lol. Just a joke.

I hear Nix got a job the next day and a 53% raise going to work with old nutt. I have no idea if that is true.

The Bud Foster thing is just as I suspected. Its a damn good ploy to get him a well deserved raise. He was getting paid about half what he should have been. For one thing, I think he is 60 years old. I think Spurrier will be around 5-10 more years, mainly because he will build a good team. I don't think he wants to wait until he is 70 to land a HC spot. I guess Spurrier offered him a job when he was at Florida also. Evidently Foster's response was less than positive back then.

I had read where Paul Johnson had not made a decision yet. I thought he was waiting until after the bowl game. Be careful in that, just because he said he is not keeping him as DC doesn't mean he is leaving. I can't see him being forced to leave either. He could become the next assistant Head Coach. Or you could have him by the end of the week, who knows. I just don't see Johnson giving him the boot, hes too smart for that. His only problem is he has two damn good DC's in front of him, wow. I see he got a QB already.

On Bowden, I was just going by what TDP and Bowden said. Arkansas asked TDP for permission to call Bowden, he agreed and one phone call. Next day or the same in fact a contract extension was in the works. Just more Indian Snake Oil to get more money. Look, Arkansas got a damn good coach. But that job looks about as shitty as it gets right now. An offense built around two of the best RB's in the nation. Both gone, terrible off the field antics by the players, lack of support by the school official's, very tough recruiting area and last and most challenging, you are all the sudden in the best conference in the SEC. Thats why Bowden who just had the best season, now has the best team of his carreer, no off the field problems, good relationship with the school. Three years left on his contract. He wasn't leaving.

As for the Vincent thing, I don't know. I just think its very reasonable that he wouldn't get punished until after he was convicted. What if Bowden suspended him and then he was found not guilty? So why then is it not OK that his punishment is after his conviction next season? I just don't see the logic in punishing him until he gets convicted of a crime. Pretty cut and dry in my mind.

No Bud for us..

I hope to God we get Tenuta!!!!

http://hamptonroads.com/blogs/kyle-tucker

Whoa.. lol.

I was just telling you what I'm hearing on the Bud Foster stuff. I honestly think it is to good to be true. We'll just have to wait it out and see. I KNOW that there are ongoing negotiations with Foster as we speak. What will come of it, I don't know. I would be very, very happy with Tenuta, but not as happy as I would be with Foster. Paul Johnson has already informed Tenuta that he would not be the DC after the bowl game, so he is definitely a huge possibility. Tenuta would be a huge upgrade from Nix. We'll just have to wait til after the bowl games to see how it shakes out..

As for Tommy and Arky, all you have to do is google it. There are about a million articles on it from the week that it was going on. He met with the Arky AD numerous times and they were even reporting on the Clemson radio station here that it was a done deal at one time. The Bowden and Arky stuff wasn't just message board rumor, it really happened.

With Vincent, why did he refuse the breat test if he hadn't been drinking and driving? It doesn't matter though, he will play in the bowl game and I believe everyone deserves a 2nd chance. I think some kind of punishment should happen. Even if he's just suspended for a half or something.

No sense in us arguing though, I was just filling you in on what was going on. I didn't mean for my post to seem like anything other than that..

I know I was kind of negative...

Its certainly not that I don't want you to land Bud Foster. We have all learned anything is possible, I could be dead wrong. I will be the first to clap and admit it if you do. I hope you get him in fact. But I think anyone who knows anything about college football knows that Bud Foster is to defense what Spurrier is to offense. Hes the best thing going. His name will be mentioned just like Spurrier's for every job opening. I think coaches have learned to make allot money by talking to other schools. If you don't get him, you guys will get a good one, Spurrier will make sure of it. You will be OK. I just don't want this to turn into the wild wild west show as it does for so many teams. I think the promise of a Head Coaching job is very very overdone as a rumor.

Good stuff, alot of bullshit, but good to have something to talk about...

Start out with Bowden. Going to Arkansas? Very silly indeed. Oh sure him and TDP certainly set up a phone call, smart. Evidently TDP really wants to keep him afterall. He had 3 years left on his contract and to think he was going to pick up and meet up with his old fired DC (Herring) in the SEC none the less, wasn't going to happen. But he got his contract extended so he did the right thing for himself. The whole thing was laughable at best. Think Arkansas hasn't known since they let Nutt go who they were getting in Petrino?

Now for the Bud Foster show. This is just like the Spurrier Alabama thing. What do I think about it? Its a big old bag of Smelly crap. Bud foster is not leaving Beamer to go be a DC at another college team, period. If he does hes stupid (and hes not stupid). When this guy leaves it will be to be a head coach or for the NFL. Not at the promise of being head coach one day (see Skip Holtz) but as the head coach as he most certainly deserves. If he did call Spurrier, what a smart move! How big do you think his new contract at Va Tech will be now? If anyone said we promise you a head coaching job one day, he is certainly smart enough to say great, call me when you have the opening. After all, Spurrier is saying he is going to be around for a while and I certainly think he would like to see his own son take over, just my opinion.

John Tenuta is a possibility though. Johnson is bringing in his own staff and his DC was from NC State and kept a top ten defense while there. So he may not keep him. I think he probably will keep Tenuta, but it could go either way.

Yes in a Paul Johnson offense and most good offenses these days recievers have to be able to block. If he can't block he will end up running the ball in the option if he stayed.

Now last and least of all. Courtney Vincent. I don't see how he could be suspended for the Bowl game. Its most coaches policy not to take disciplinary action while a case is still pending. A very weak case in fact. Most believe he is certainly not going to get convicted. He passed the field sobriety test and it should have been over at that point. Then they decided to take him in and give him a breathalizer. Evidently he refused. Sorry, this is probably not going to hold up in court because they had no right to take him in after he passed the field sobriety test. Just like anything else we don't know the whole story. However Bowden is perfectly justified in not suspending him until he actually gets convicted. If he does no problem, he will certainly be punished for it next season.

No controversy there in my opinion, just people looking for one. One things for certain not too many head coaches or other fan bases should be criticizing Bowden on how he disciplines his team. I am quite certain he near the top for BCS head coaches as far as not having disciplinary problems. I believe last years bowl game was the last time he had a problem and it wasn't much to write home about. Just my opinion though.

Oh.. I almost forgot..

The word is, USC president Andrew Sorensen is resigning. Interesting..

College football has been crazy..

Glad to finally hear from you. I figured it would take a while for you to get settled in. So everything is good huh?

Everything is good here. I'm done with this semester, so I got about a month off. It's gonna be nice to get a little break.

You're right, a lot has been going on in college football since you left. Tommy Bowden almost left for Arky, Nix left for the Ole Miss job, Paul Johnson to GT, Petrino to Arky.. But none of them bigger than the talk of Bud Foster to Carolina. Here's what I know about the situation. Bud Foster contacted Spurrier about the job before Nix left. Spurrier isn't going to hire anyone until after the bowl games are over. Apparently, Foster has been offered the HC coach job after Spurrier retires. Negotiations are still ongoing with Foster but Spurrier isn't going to give him to much time so that he won't miss out on the next big coach. It all seemed to be to good to be true at first, but when Tony Morrel started giving out this info it seems to hold water. All Gamecock fans can do is cross their fingers and wait til after the bowl games. It would be unbelievable if it were to happen, and as we all know, anything can happen..

The two big names after Foster are John Tenuta (GT DC) and Brian Van Gorder (Falcons DC). Either way, it looks as though Spurrier is going after a homerun. If we can't get Foster I want Tenuta. I'm anxious to see whats going to happen..

Also, a 4 star WR that Carolina recruited hard last year is going to transfer from GT to Carolina. His name is DJ Donely and he doesn't think his future as a WR is to bright in Johnson's offense. We'll take him!

Have you heard this whole ordeal with Courtney Vincent? He was charged with a DUI and isn't going to be suspended for the bowl game. I guess Bowden knows more about the situation than we do. It would be hard not to suspend a guy that was drinking and driving though. What do you think? Brent said that they better suspend him. I'll leave this one alone though. I got better things to worry about like Carolina's bowl game.. LOL.

I just got back!! Everything is good, counting down the days now....

Lots going on in college football since I left. How about Petrino going to Arkansas? Just as I suspected Ga Tech got my coach!!! ACC Championship or better coming right up for them. Who's gonna be your Defensive coordinator?

Bowden gets extended, which If I can't have my coach, I'm OK with it. May as well stick it out with him now. How's everything?

Six Gamecocks Named to Sporting News SEC All-Freshman Squad

Nov. 28, 2007

Six University of South Carolina players were named to the 2007 SEC All-Freshman Team, as selected by The Sporting News, it was announced today. The Gamecocks were represented by more members on the 25-man squad than any other Southeastern Conference school.

Wide receiver Dion Lecorn and tight end Weslye Saunders represented South Carolina on the offensive side of the ball, defensive tackle Ladi Ajiboye, defensive end Travian Robertson and linebacker Cliff Matthews were named to the defensive squad, and Chris Culliver was selected as the kick returner. All six Gamecocks are true freshmen from the highly-regarded 2007 recruiting class.

Lecorn was the Gamecocks' fourth-leading receiver, catching 27 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. He started six of the final eight games and logged 16 of his receptions for 215 yards in the final three contests. He had a career-best eight-catch, 109-yard performance against Arkansas. Saunders caught a dozen passes for 151 yards, an average of 12.6 yards per catch.
Ajiboye made 10 starts, most among the Gamecock freshmen, recording 39 tackles, including 3.0 sacks. Robertson was the only freshman to start the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. He notched seven tackles in 12 games. Matthews logged 26 tackles including 2.0 tackles for loss while starting each of the final nine games at outside linebacker.

Culliver ranked eighth in the SEC in kick returns, averaging 23.8 yards per return. He logged 809 kick return yards, the second-highest mark in school history.

PLAYERS ON THE 2007 SPORTING NEWS SEC ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM
South Carolina - 6; Auburn - 4; Alabama - 3; Georgia - 3; Arkansas - 2; Florida - 2; LSU - 2; Tennessee - 2; Mississippi State - 1.

Everything is working out GREAT!!!

I am in Kuwait and unless something changes I will be at the Atlanta airport very early Saturday morning.

I have a rental car reserved so it should work out. Its the best option because my tags are expired. Unless something goes wrong I should be home in plenty of time for the game Saturday. Probably between 12 and 2 pm. This will probably be the last time I write unless something changes. I will see you soon!

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

So you find out tomorrow?

Are you going to call or tell me on here? I have to work and go to school tomorrow but Jen will be here all day after she gets out of school if you want to call.

I think renting a car is probably your best option. If you get into a time crunch, daddy is the last person you will want to wait on. You will miss the game for sure.. Daddy wants you to know that he will be more than happy to pick you up though. Keep us updated!

Sunday, November 11, 2007

Hey Blake!!!! GET THIS!!!!!

First off, I haven't even thought about it. I'm more than likely going to just rent a car. It doesn't cost that much and it will solve everything. I have to wait until I get my times to find out for sure. Thats probably what will happen.

But get this, I just checked, if Clemson wins this weekend, the ACC championship game is on December 1st. I WILL BE HOME!!!!! I only got to see the Fla State game. Wow!

Yeah and to boot Boston College is not looking too good...

I will be coming into either Greenville or Columbia. I will get into Atlanta first so.... If my flight ends up on coming in on Saturday to Atlanta early and my flight to Greenville or Columbia is not until that night. I am gonna see if somebody can come get me in Atlanta. Its only about a 2 and a half hour drive and I can always drive back. Of course so I can make the game and it will also be just as easy and safer driving to Atlanta during the day as it would driving to and from Greenville or Columbia at night.

I will know everything on the 15th, times and all. I will call and let you guys know for sure. I can't say for certain it will be Saturday, could be Sunday. But its looking right now like Saturday.

Saturday, November 10, 2007

Good win today!

Tiger's are in control of their own destiny. I'm thinking they will play for the ACC. Just a hunch..

Any idea of which airport you will arrive at bro? One week left!

Ah, they will get better....

You guys are gonna have a couple of rebuilding years. By that I mean a couple with the better players. Not just since day one.

Clemson has a good shot. Thats all I'll say. This year can still be great or awful.

I am going to start moving back the day after tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed to fly in on the morning of the 17th (In time for the game). But nothing is for sure on the exact date. Only for sure I am coming.

Friday, November 09, 2007

Sorry for the drought of posts bro..

How's things going?? You ready to come home!? Any new news about when you'll be back? Give me any info you can!

You won't here any football talk outta me in this post. Not much to talk about for a Gamecock fan.. lol.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

I forgot you went to the game....

I hate it that it was that one....

But taking lumps, I don't think so. OL takes a long time to build. Thats the first game you have lost that you should have won since Spurrier got there. In my opinion, you guys have been blessed. How many teams have you beaten you shouldn't have? Yes, its not like Vanderbilt is Duke either, lol. So, I like the direction you guys are going in. Except the fans, booing and acting stupid. Saying his offense doesn't work. OK, they could meld Bear Bryant, Danny Ford, Vince Dooley, Joe Morrison and every other great coach together. Then bring in Joe Montana in his best years at QB. Your offense still wouldn't work without an OL,period. It will get there.

I listened to the Central Michigan game. In the first quarter in fact it looked like my prediction was a reality. They came out and went right down the field. Clemson came out and threw an interception. After the 1st quarter CM played like shit. Yes we have a very good football team. However it can certainly score 70 points one week and then 3 the next. Which is what I expect to happen.

I guess you could look at it as 2 losses. I think in my mind after Va Tech its actually 4 and 6 in the past 10 games. Not really a very good quality win unless you consider FSU a quality win. I think they would beat us now. So yes, it would be great to win out. That would mean we had turned it around. We should be beating everyone left on our schedule including BC. That would be great. Too bad its not going to happen.

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Hey, I'll take my lumps..

The sad part was that we went to Columbia to watch the pathetic showing. I had a GREAT seat. Right smack in the middle of the 50 yard line, club seats (no bleachers, seats with backs.) I was still miserable the whole game. I told you guys that if we played another game like we did in the 2nd half of the UNC game, we would lose. We played worse than we did in the UNC game. It was horrific. The O-line was terrible. Defense played well enough for us to win. Giving credit where it is due, Vandy is a better team than advertised. The losses that they have came by, Bama, Auburn, and a very close game to UGA. Not to make excuses, we still should have won. It wasn't a complete surprise though after watching the UNC game.

I don't blame it on Spurrier. If LB's are running by the O-line untouched the majority of the game you don't have much to work with. I questioned some of his play calling in the UNC game but not the Vandy game. We just have to put it all behind us and try to win the rest of them. I think we can if the O-line just has an average game. They don't have to dominate the line, just be average. It sux but we gotta let it go.

Clemson really lit it up. I thought they would though. You're not going to hold a talented offense like that down long. I never got incredibly down on the Clemson squad like the other fans did after those 2 losses. They are still a good team. Will the coaching staff allow them to have a successful ending to the season? That's the real question. I've been saying that since well before the season started. You guys remember, don't you? It's going to be an interesting ride the rest of the way. Who the hell knows what is going to happen.. lol.

We're ready for you to come on home bro. I wasn't expecting you that early, that's great news. Let me know if you get anymore info..

Something very interesting mentioned.......

June Jones. I mean, I thought about Jerry Glanville but not him. I just like Jerry. He ran the run and shoot at the Houston Oilers. But he makes his money on defense. He just started as the head coach this year fresh from Hawaii at some little known school. He would have been or could be a good one. It just seems as though its his turn to be successful too.

But this post isn't about him. Its about his mentor, June Jones. I'd be willing to bet, one of the people Spurrier fashioned his offense after was June Jones. June is the creator of the run and shoot. My opinion is that the fun and gun is a modification of the run and shoot. It does something important in that it has running, the run and shoot does not. Short passes in the run and shoot take the place of the run. I think Hawaii can hang offensively with anyone in college football. So why not?

Some would say he has an exceptional QB in Colt Brennan. True, but that offense makes a QB look very good. I think Harper could look just as good. Korn? We all know I want Paul Johnson, I still think he is our best option and this would be the exact opposite. But it certainly is a very interesting thought.

Having said all that. I like what James Davis said this week. He consistently blocks, hits and plays like we want everyone on the team to play. At full speed. He said point blank. We will win this weekend, because we have to, guaranteed. Now, he could very well be wrong. But I can guarantee that if everyone on the team had his attitude we would be undefeated and win the rest of our games including Bowden. Bowden for example is busy talking about how well Maryland is coached and what a good team they are. In other words, as far as he is concerned expect more of the same thing we have come to expect from the Tigers this weekend. Lack of effort and an overabundance of excuses afterwards.

OKAY!!! Time to spruce things up a bit!!!!!!!

Its getting close to the big game so smack talk time. Which means its getting close to time for me to come home. I am trying to make it in time for the BC game. I can't say for sure, I could make it or miss it by a matter of hours.

The Tigers looked pretty good Saturday. Central Michigan was terrible. Every time I see them play pretty good, deep down in a stupid part of my brain I think, wow what if they have finally turned it around. I see a little shit talking from the players. Ummm, I'm not convinced. Win 3 out of the WF, BC, SC and Maryland game and I will be satisfied. Duke should be a given.

I hear allot of criticism of Spurrier by Gamecock fans. Saying his offense sux. I think they need to take a step back and rethink things. Hes doing fine. I believe this is the first game that he lost that he should have won. It happens, believe me. It will happen again even when he gets the team to where they need to be. I still think you guys are having a good year.

Oh Smack talk building up to the big game and my return.....

Having said all that Blake, I'm sorry the Gamecocks sux......lol

BOWDEN REDSHIRT KORN NOW!!!!!

He is not going to come in and save the day. I have my fingers crossed he does one thing right this year and gives him the Medical Redshirt!!!!

You guys are doing great...

I hear they looked different in the second half. I didn't get to see the game. But Spurrier's concept is exactly what he did. He has always built a big lead and then ran the football. At one time he was running up the score. But after they changed the way they do the polls he also reverted back.

Sounds crazy, and obviously it didn't work out last Saturday. But you guys won. Its actually smart, he would like to be able to do it one day successfully. It is safe, one interception can change the momentum and get your QB down mentally. It also helps build a running game. Something you will need to win consistently. So while it needs work, it is probably what he needs to continue to work on and he will. Faster defensive teams such as LSU and in our case Va Tech will shut down all those slants and run and shoots he does. He knows he has to be more well balanced.

What about Kentucky, wow.

I don't mention him as much because I haven't got to see South Florida's team play. But the coach there has built the team from the ground up and they are no fluke. He is also someone that would be good for us to get no doubt. He is also probably very attainable right now. Probably not after this year. I bet he gets a new contract with a huge buyout at the end of the season. Another one that we will regret like Grobes if we don't jump on him.

OK.. I'm Now A USF Fan...

My lord, she is hot!

Sorry for the lack of posts bro..

I had a couple of tests this week but I got them out of the way.

Time for a little sand-bagging on my part.. Carolina is ranked as 6th in the nation in the BCS polls. That's great and all, BUT, if we have another offensive performance like we had in the second half of that UNC game; we will lose the rest of the games on our schedule. I have not seen a game where a team was as night/day as South Carolina was in the 2 halfs of that game. We came out like world beaters in the first half. In the second half we came out like Southern Turd State. We have got to get more consistent on offense. O-line was the biggest concern in the 2nd half. Spurrier didn't call a very good game in the 2nd half as well. We lit up the UNC defense passing the ball in the first half. In the second half we come out running the ball behind the center. Right behind the center, every play. Why not run it to the outside, if you must run on every play. I know Spurrier will figure it out though. I just hope we don't have a huge crash and burn season like Clemson did last season. I'm preparing myself for it but I think Spurrier will figure it out.

Blake will play Saturday! Not start, but play. I know it doesn't sound like the great idea right now. Then again, think about the success Blake had when he returned last season. I think Blake may blow it up the rest of the season when he gets his shot. If he doesn't, it's wonderful to know that we have a dependable QB in Smelley. I think we may go to the game this Sat. against Vandy. Going to be nice to see the Gamecocks again in person, especially considering that it isn't on TV.

Also, prediction on the Clemson vs. Central game this weekend. I think Clemson is going to blow them out of the water by 3 TDs or more. Thing is, I'm not so sure that that's what the Clemson fans want to happen. College football is crazy!

Having said all that....

All of the sudden this weekend's game has become critical for Bowden. I think Central Michigan is a knock off type team. A team that plays with all out effort against bigger schools. This is the type of program that hopes to catch you looking the other way. Not up for a game with them. Its very very possible this weekend we get upset. That would wake up even the most die hard Bowden supporters.

We are banged up. Normally I would say it couldn't be helped and its not our fault. No so this time. We are banged up due to a lack of toughness. I mean the UFC champion could let me beat the crap out of him if he just stood there and let me do it. Thats what we did with Va Tech, it is our fault.

Making my case for Paul Johnson....

First off lets look at the current program:

Pros:

  1. Good recruiting
  2. Decent offensive scheme in theory
  3. Number 12 in the country at total defense
  4. Off the field behavior both in and out of the classroom
Cons:

  1. Lack of toughness on both sides of the ball
  2. Inability to adapt to adversity from both the first half during the game and after a loss
  3. Changing the game plan to something that just doesn't even make sense, poor poor coaching after these loses, again inability to adapt
  4. Trying to play football with finesse instead of toughness, finesse is for tennis!
  5. Lack of effort, inability to inspire players
  6. Special teams
  7. Special teams
  8. Special teams
What Paul Johnson could bring:

  1. Resurgence of a winning tradition built on toughness
  2. Recruiting different types of players, he would recruit Va Tech type players which believe it or not are much easier to come by (Tribble Resse would probably be better than any QB he has ever had at Navy). Run block recievers instead of uncommon athletes.
  3. Probably the best running game in history
  4. A toughness we have not had since Danny Ford
  5. A team with a refuse to lose attitude
  6. Ability to inspire players to play beyond their potential

Paul Johnson can win without big name recruits. Virtually everyone he recruited even 2 stars would be better athletes than the ones he has at Navy. He would win and that alone would attract even better athletes. I feel like he could bring Clemson football back to what it was built on.

Its such a shame for Bowden. He has all the capability to get the job done. Either he can't see it or its not worth the effort it would take to win. Why do I say that? Look at the way we played FSU and even South Carolina before last year. Those teams looked like champions. The ones that showed up on those weeks. Unfortunately its always a different team the week before and the week after. He has the ability to inspire. He does it every time his job is in question. Somehow this makes me even madder and is another strike against keeping him around.

Grobes is just not even a possibility buddy...

You forget he signed a 10 year contract. In his contract its a 4 million dollar buy out for whatever school wants him. Then 2 million for him a few more million for Bowden's buyout. At least a million for assistant coaches leaving and coming, probably 2. 10, 11, 12 or 13 million dollars right off the bat. Its not happening. I wish it could but its not. I hear WF is paying him very good too.

Face it, Paul Johnson is the best candidate. South Florida or even Central Florida's coach would be the next on the list.

Eight games? I can't see it happening this year. Did you see what WF did to a much improved Fla State team? Maryland is no push over at home either. Hell they beat us last year in the Valley. BC? Yeah right. SC? Nope. That's 4 right there. We might beat one of them. Still only a 7 win season. Half the team is not practicing right now because Va Tech beat the shit out of them. So Central Michigan is no Guarantee either.

How about Bud Carson from Va Tech?

Will the hammer drop?

Will the hammer drop this year? Will Tommy Bowden finally leave Clemson? Or will he pull the hat trick and win the 8 neccesary games to keep his job? Thats all he needs guys. It doesn't matter who he beats, all he needs is 8 and TDP will have no choice to keep him. The thing is, he is good for 8 wins. That is all. I feel like we are in a time recycle, because his teams do this every year and we fans do this every year.

I can't understand some of the few supporters. Its almost ridiculous to read what they have to say. They talk about alma mater singing, how pretty the field is, how our players stay in school (that isn't anything to brag about, because James Davis and CJ Spiller are like tweedledee and tweedledum though I hate to say that about them. I heard them announcing starting lineups for the GT game and it was awful), and that Tommy is a "nice" guy! These have got to be women and middle aged men who go just to have something to do on the weekends. Why does everyone think another coach who may bring success will bring the school trouble? Why are these people not mad about the Clemson Tigers gettting pushed around in DEATH VALLEY? Why do they like national analysts laughing at us and calling Clemson schizoprhenic and just doing what they always do?

Jim Grobe. Throw him an offer he can't refuse. I guarantee you Wake Forest isn't giving him a million a year and if they are its just barely, because the school isn't big enough. It is time for this program to get serious about football and throw 2 million a year for 5 to 7 years. This is the guy to go after!

My take on Wadstat?

Well first off look at us for example. Bowden is gonna be good for Clemson in the long run. Lou Holtz was good for South Carolina. Wadstat is certainly going to be good for Pittsburg. Why? I mean all these coaches at the moment look to be miserable failures. Not so fast my friend, lol. Ten years ago most people had never even heard of Clemson or South Carolina. We think so, but they didn't. I knew that Dan Marino came from Pitt, most didn't even know that. Their only claim to fame.

Sure Danny Ford give us a little fame with the national title. But it was certainly too long ago to matter these days. In short all these coaches put us on the map. Everyone knows who SC, Clemson and Pittsburg is now. Now you have Steve Spurrier, obviously he is going to be successfull for you. When Bowden leaves, we will eventually maybe after another blunder or two going to get a good coach. Pittsburg is probably going to get one eventually too, but Wadstatt is far from being in condemmed status at the moment.

Eventually these coaches will be good for the school. Maybe not in results on the field, but making us household names. This looks mighty tasty to a good coach wanting to make a name for himself. Knowing that a big name coach failed and they could make it big time by turning their failures around.

Hes another however that is not even a possibility in my mind to come to Clemson. I'm not so big on NFL coaches coming to schools like ours. They need the USC's or Miami's type recruits to be successfull. We need a different type. South Florida's coach comes to mind as a legit candidate with a strong possibility of success. I don't think Petrino is out of the realm of possibility and he is a very good recruiter. He also falls into the category of being an asshole, I like the idea of that one, lol.

Oh, didn't Wadstat get his ass handed to him by none other than Paul Johnson just last weekend? I just had a wonderfull thought. Navy has never been able to beat Notre Dame, it seems like a strong possibility this year! GOOD TO GO!

Good posts Bro,

I didn't get to read the Plyler article. The link wouldn't work for some reason. I tend to agree with you about Rich Rod. I think he has found his comfort zone at WVU, simular to Grobe at Wake. I think Paul Johnson is a very high possiblity.

Another name has come up as of late. It's someone that I've heard you mention in the past. You was pretty high on him then, not sure if you still are. Dave Wandstat. I don't think Pitt is to happy with him right now. Thoughts on him?

My take on J. Johnson....

First off its amazing how many Friends TDP has. LOL

But lets just take it seriously for a second.....

Would it be good? Sure who wouldn't want to see him roll in. But, he had unbelievable talent at Miami (Hurricanes) and Dallas. He didn't with the Dolphins and he failed miserably. On top of that most say he broke more rules in recruiting than anyone in history. He just never got caught strangely enough. Not so sure on him. But, I wouldn't complain either.

The more thins look the same, the more they look different this year.....

First off read these articles if you have not already before reading on:

http://www.tigernet.com/blogs/plyler?entry=20071011

http://www.tigernet.com/view/story.do?id=6858

Things are very different this year from past years. First off talent is the big no go fact vs the get out of jail free card. In short we have it, no excuses there. Secondly, quite simple and not hard to even come up with. The Gamecocks, best team left on our schedule. Even if we pull out a miracle in the rest of our games, I still see us losing in Columbia. Not gonna be the old get out of jail card either, another no go. In other words instead of these being saving graces as in years past they are actually factors having an opposite effect. Ones that will be hard at best for Tommy to overcome.

Mickey has somewhat changed his point of view. He makes a good point in that most Tommy supporters have gone over to the other side. Even they are accepting the truth. I'd say his only supporters are guys that don't really care or understand college football now. His article was a little different at the end. Can we afford to get rid of him, and Can we afford not too?

As for the rumors, the Rich Rodriguez thing is silly. He is not leaving West Va. I believe its where he is from on top of the new contract. They love him, he could start losing and they would still love him for a very long time. Why in the shit would he wanna drag himself into the lion's den? Wouldn't even make sense. He gets favor in the polls and has the best oppurtunity with his schedule for a National Title.

I like the fact Paul Johnson was mentioned. Mentioned as the likely attainable and affordable candidate. Yes, he would draw in the crowds. Winning draws in crowds. He would do it. The big money comes from older fans. Older fans who still remember Danny Ford. Danny Ford ran the option. It would be like going back in time. They would flock to the games and open up their pockets to see it again. I guarantee it. I am quite sure TDP knows this too. I think he had had enough last year, but it just wasn't logical to make a change. For one, financially and secondly it would cause major controversy. Most would be saying whoever came won with Bowden's talent and he would have done the same. Its not gonna be the case now. Most of his supporters are simply tired of the same thing year in and year out. It seems even worse this year.

Having said all that, I can't see us not losing 2 out of the next 4. We couldn't get up for GT or even a home game with VT. I can't see us getting up for Central Michigan. Either we squeak by or lose that one. BC will beat us, Maryland or WF will too. Maybe both, were losing in columbia big this year. Save a miracle, hes gone boys...

If you really want to bring someone in to help with hitting...

They should put Levon Kirland on the coaching staff. If I am not mistaken, I read somewhere that he actually works on campus now anyway. He is one of the biggest hitters to ever come through right under their noses.

Also, if its not broke don't fix it. Special teams are beyond broke, the offense is broke, the defense has played very well. The defense has played well enough to win every game. In fact they have kept points off the board in some pretty bad situations where the other team should have scored.

I think if you brought in Paul Johnson and his offense and I mean his offense players and all. Players that showed up at Navy, some of the smartest around that just looked big enough to play. Non-recruited players no James Davis, CJ Spiller, Jacoby ford, Korn, Harper, Recruited Offensive lineman, took them all away. Brought in his players on offense. Kept our defense and VK, all our defensive players. We would be undefeated right now. You can't convince me he wouldn't have won all our games. Think about it.

But thats just my opinion, think hes not able to get them to hit harder year in and year out than they should really be able to? He does, every year in fact. I say bring in Paul Johnson as Head Coach. Offer Danny Ford a position on the staff. He ran the same type team as Paul Johnson. He may or may not want the job but I would ask. One things for sure, it would be interesting and we would be one of the most physical teams in college football.

Having said all that, we do certainly have the best oppurtunity yet to end up with a losing record. With one of the most talented football teams we have ever had. All we have to do is keep playing the same way. Its very possible and I think Bowden is gone if it does.

Oh and one other thing. Bowden is right about Special Teams. He can't fix them, he has done everything he can do. Its not getting fixed. He spent the past 15 months working on them and if anything they are at their worst, which is damn bad. Hes not fixing them this week or next. In fact hes not gonna fix them all year.

Unorganized Rants from the Battle Kat.

Vance, I have been thinking about it, and I want Clemson to find a completely new staff. I know we got good coaches and some are worth saving, but as with you we need something new. They let Jacoby Ford get destroyed and Clemson didn't pop anyone back in retaliation. Koenning should have told one of his players to destroy somebody, take a personal foul if need be.

I know you like VK and the defense is playing good, but I don't think anyone fears our defense like they should. They are all fast, but who is regarded as nasty? Watching LSU play Carolina, I want a defense like that or like VT. Sure they did some dirty shit, but it gets into the players heads. And now Davis and Spiller don't even scare anybody. Its not their fault, but it is the truth. Clemson doesn't scare anyone and you can bet on losses to BC and SC because they will push Clemson around. Maryland's offensive line is scary and Wake Forest just makes the coaching staff look like a bunch of fools. Tommy Bowden said that he couldn't spend anymore time on special teams Sunday. That is the most foolish thing I have ever heard. He has lost 2 games and most of it was special teams. I think they need to spend twice the amount of time. Bowden is just too irritating to listen to sometimes after losses. Also, I do agree that he is a good guy and that he really is giving it his best, but it's time for somebody on this staff to get nasty, drop some F-bombs at the players and make them come out busting people in the mouth. Quit paying attention to percentages on offense and go out there and be more physical. Sadly, I don't think we have the type of coaching mentality for this. Also, Burton Burns leaving this program really hurt the running game IMO. He got all he could get out of mediocre talent for years and I think the RB's just played better for him. Beside's Andre Powell had a background in special teams and I think they may be even worse.

I would love to have Jim Grobe as a coach. Paul Johnson would be fine too. Hell bring Danny Ford in as an interim this year and maybe Clemson will f$#*ing hit somebody. I am still pissed about the Jacoby Ford play. They should not have let them get away with that period. We need David Dunham back. That was our last true head buster and I guarantee somebody in Blacksburg would be seeing stars right now if he would have been playing.

This week a very ignorant fan made a post that I actually had to agree with surprisingly.....

I mean this guy must have couldn't even spell. But I'll have to admit, I had thought the same thing. I would just as soon have Tommy West still. I mean West never had the players Bowden has.

We are missing something critical, something that everyone can see. Toughness, we don't have it. A bunch of pansies. I'm sorry, we just are a sissy football team under Bowden and we have been since the last of West's influence left. Or maybe it was Rodriguez, I don't know for sure. I just know Bowden's first couple of years we played tough. But not since.

I would also like to see players who say "Winning is OK, but all I really want is to see little snot bubbles everytime I hit them". Thats what we lack, toughness.

I hate to say it, if we are gonna go 8 and 4 again and go to the Dookie Bowl. I'd just as soon lose every game and get a change. I'm fed up and I don't have one bit of faith left that we are going to ever be any different than we are now. Even if its a failure and in the grand scheme of things its likely it would be, I still want a change. I'm tired of the same crap year in and year out. Just give me something else to look at for a change. Even if its a new form of sorriness, I don't care.

Oh and I still like VK....

We are leading the ACC in total defense. He only allowed Va Tech about 200 total yards. Pretty damn good to motivate a defense like that when things are so shitty. He may or may not be a good head coach, I wouldn't complain or argue with a decision to give him a shot.

I read Chris Ard's article. He was saying a buyout would mean $600,000 a year for the next 4 years. Not something the administrators would want to do. BULLSHIT! TDP's has made it plain the money is already set aside for that. That comes out to 2.4 million. We gave Danny Ford 3 million almost 20 years ago! 3 million was alot more and much harder to come by back then.

I think they would like to give him one more year. They buyout wouldn't be much at all then. However it won't factor into the decision to keep or fire him. I think most fans want a change. If they really want a change they need to do one thing, stop going to the games. I can't see where they have had much of a good time in 6 out of the last ten games anyway.

Brent, get your nose out of the pizza sauce and Erin's butt......

Glad to hear you posts, but where have you been. Come on, lets talk coaching changes, we do it every year.

Good discussion, lets go throught the list then....

Let me start out by saying my pick is still Paul Johnson, over everyone you mentioned even the outlandish ones.

I don't see how we have a shot at Grobe at all. Of course we would want him, it just doesn't seem possible so not much on that one.

I think Tuberville is an asshole. But I am like you were about Spurrier, you didn't like him but would gladly take him as a head coach. I'd certainly be happy with that however.... I am sure I told you , I stayed in Alabama for a weekend and he is on every other commercial. I don't see him getting fired or quitting any time soon.

The Cohwer thing is a bit overdone don't you think? He is coaching at Pittsburg still right? If he retires, initially I don't think he is gonna give two shits about coaching college football. Maybe in a few years he would get bored, but not right now. I believe last time I saw where this was started by Cock fans. Or maybe a very ignorant Clemson fan, but having said all that stranger things have happened.

I don't know anything about Bellicheck. So I'm not even gonna touch that one.

Speaking of stranger things. I have had J. Johnson on my mind lately. I don't know exactly why. I can't say in all certainty hes not bored and looking to come back into coaching. Why not? But again just silly fan talk.

No comment on Bobby Johnson, I think that was started solely by Chriss Pless.

One things for sure, I don't want a nice guy. I want an asshole. I want people to say yeah they won but the coach is such a dickhead! Thats what I want, a complete prick who will stop at nothing (except recruiting violations) to win. I am being totally serious, nice guys finish last hence Steve Spurrier a proven asshole. He seems to do quite well. lol

PS..

I'm not going to crow on the Gamecocks to much just yet. It almost seems to good to be true with how well they are doing right now. I don't want to mess it up.. lol. All signs point to great season as of now. 7th in the nation, every team left on our schedule looks beatable, but.. We could also lose the final four games..

As long as we beat UNC, Vandy, Clemson, and 1 out of the other 3 teams (Tenn, Arky, and UF) I will be happy. We should be able to pull at least that off and finish with a strong 9-3 or 10-2 season with a shot at LSU again in Atlanta. Here's to hoping for the best!

Who's Clemson's next HC?

You guys have summed up the VT game. No need for me comment on it. Tommy could save his job once again by beating the Gamecocks but I feel about like you guys do on the chances of that happening this season. Time for the Tigers to look towards the future. It's time for TDP to show some sack and send baby Bowden packing..

You guys won't believe some of the rumors stirring among the Clemson faithful. Chris Pless said a while back that Jimmy Johnson was in the picture. Since the VT game I have also heard on the message boards Bill Cowher and Bill Belichick were in the picture.. lol. Unbelievible what those guys are saying. Let's be realistic though. Vance, I know the 2 guys you would want: Paul Johnson and Jim Grobe. Paul Johnson is a good shot but not as sure about Grobe. I think Grobe is in his comfort zone at Wake. Who knows though, after Spurrier came to Carolina.. You never know. Another good mention I've heard is Tommy Tuberville. He is kind of on the hot seat right now and I could see him at Clemson. Also, I've heard some Clemson fans mention Bobby Johnson; coach of Vanderbilt. I could also see him at Clemson. I think he is a good coach and he would do well with Clemson's talent. Look what he did with only 2 play makers in 2005. One more candidate that can't go without mention, Victor Koenning. He is already established at Clemson. He knows all of the current players and he is already recruiting future prospects for Clemson.

There are a lot more coaches out there than many think. Which one will Clemson land if (when) Tommy is fired? Also, how bad do you think it hurts recruiting if Tommy is fired? That would be the only downfall of Tommy leaving the Clemson program..

They sure had me fooled....

Maybe it was just false hope. Or maybe its the fact I have only got to listen to them. I really thought they were doing something this year. I really thought they were doing what they had to do to get to where we should be.

In two weeks time, they have gone right back to the same old shit. Spence does not have the ability to adjust. He can't adjust at half time and even worse he can't adjust correctly after a loss. Special teams are just unbelievably bad all the sudden.

Bowden should thank his lucky stars we played FSU already, they would mop the floor with us right now. Myself, I can easily see us losing 4 more games, putting us at 6-6. All they have to do is continue to play like they are right now. BC and SC are going to give us a good beating. WF and Maryland we can expect one loss between the two, quite possibly both. I'm telling you, Central Michigan is going to play us hard and I dunno. I have had a bad feeling about them anyway. So it can certainly be real real bad by the end of the year.

I think Bowden is a good guy, I even think he does his best. But with the talent he has now, we can certainly expect no better from here on as long as he stays. Things are different now, SC will mop the floor with us this year in Columbia, beating them has been the only thing saving his job year in and year out. He loses this year, 2 years in a row, thats the one thing they won't put up with.

Rotten!

Vance, you would not have wanted to see it. Clemson lost the game as soon as Cullen Harper threw a pick 6 on the first drive. Clemson was very unprepared on offense and the special teams are just awful. On the kickoff return for a 100 yards, it was kicked 6 yards into the endzone, the guy took a step backwards, and he still seemingly jogged down the field for the touchdown. I have seen Clemson get embarassed before, but this was dismal. Tommy Bowden should really be ashamed of his performance. Then he had the gall to compare himself to Mark Richt and Mack Brown in his teleconference today because they have lost twice. Does he really think he is on th level with those guys? Definitely not, because when they go to their office they stare at multiple conference championships and Tommy Bowden stares at Humanitarian bowl trophies. Oh yeah Vance, I can't see this team doing better than 8-4 and quite frankly I don't see them getting there. I really can't understand how you don't have your team playing its best every game 9 years into your program. Its one thing to lose, but completely different to lose by poor coaching and adjustment. Oh and another thing: Rob Spence is terrible!

Well theres the answer...

I certainly did have a good feeling about this years team.....

I guess now it was just hope instead of reality.

I didn't get to watch or hear the game this week, is was on at 3 in the morning. But looking at the play calling it was not good, only running the ball 12 times, good god (Kentucky gameplan?). Special teams all the sudden are as bad or worse than last year. Certainly you will never beat Beamer with poor special teams.

I thought we had a shot to beat everyone on our schedule. Now, I think Maryland and Wake are every bit as good as VT and GT, maybe better. BC and SC are no doubt better. Central Michigan is even a worry playing like we are. I can easily forsee us losing four more games playing like we have the past two weeks. If we do lose 4 more, we will most likely be getting a new coach. Especially if one of them is SC which is likely. Good person and effort aside, we have too much talent to do this every year, even his brother pretty much said that on the radio this week.

This is our best shot at a good season, everybody knows it. I don't see TDP bringing him back if he does what its looking likely he will do this year. Funny how things change for the the Tigers in a 2 week period. I'm very disappointed.

Thanx bro!

Yea it was a huge win; a must win. We gotta keep it up though. Go in there the next couple of weeks and whip UNC and Vandy and we could find ourselves in the top 5 when we face Tennessee. We should move to around 7th Sunday. Never would have thought that we would be ranked this high mid-way through the season!

It was a good win but we could have played better.. Smelley had a few bad passes where he had a guy open and overthrew him. He had a good game over-all and you gotta remember, he's just a Freshman. Our running game didn't come-on to much in this game. We were calling power runs the whole game and Kentucky answered them well. Our run D wasn't the best either but we were defending against the pass on almost every play. We were going to let them get their yards on the ground but we weren't going to let them score off of it. Bend don't break approach, and it worked. We held the Kentucky offense to less than 400 yards total offense, which hasn't been done in 9 games. We also held them to less than 40 points, which hasn't been done this season.

I'm telling you guys right now, we have two of the best defensive players in the nation in Eric Norwood and Emanuel Cook and they are only sophmores! Eric Norwood tied a NCAA record when he scored 2 TD on defense. What is so bad is that he could have had 2 more turnovers, as he dropped 2 picks. Emanuel Cook was in on every play and when he hits, he hits hard! He reminds me of Ko Simpson but I think Cook is better. Mark my words, both of these players will be on a All-American list one day. I'm telling you..

Overall, great needed win. What do you guys think about your game this weekend? I really don't have a clue. Both teams you never know about. What do ya'll think?

Good win for the Gamecocks!

Like I said before. As of right now anyway I think they are the second best team on your schedule. Everyone else looks beatable...

You guys had a good feeling during the LSU game. It just had an air around it like things could have turned in your favor at any minute. I think you guys have a very legitimate shot this year.

Yes, time to move on....

But not forget about how bad this really was....

I agree about the time of possession. But not that the defense didn't do its job. 189 yards rushing sounds kind of bad however, not when you figure that out of 62 plays they ran the ball 46 times. They also only scored one TD very early on the game. Then only 6 points, 3 of which were on a blocked punt putting them in FG range.

I can't blame VK for sticking with his plan and letting them have moderated success rushing, when they were not able to get it in the end zone. 250 total yards and 13 points is not that bad.

But offensively, I don't blame Harper and I don't think he folded even under alot of poor blocking and pressure all night. He had two dropped TD passes very well thrown. He also had a TD pass called back for an incredibly stupid and obvious personnel foul by a lineman. Then you figure out of 4 or 5 missed field goals one was 30 yds. Long story short, all that was certainly not all the missed opportunities, 24 points in fact, but it was certainly enough to say Harper did his job.

I listened to the game and of course did not get to see it. But Clemson fans who did that are always quick to throw Spence and Bowden under the bus said the game was called good. In other words the gameplan was a good one. Not what you expect to hear from the fans.

I don't buy into the blitzing deal. This was just another case of players not executing. Not executing as usual in losses I might add. Hasn't been this was all year. I don't have an answer, I think they are being coached well. I just don't have an answer. Very frustrating as usual knowing they have the ability to win and just choose not to.

The Va Tech game is certainly critical now. We will certainly get beat alot worse if we play like we did last weekend because Va Tech is better than Ga Tech in that they have a more well rounded offense and certainly a better defense. Special teams from Beamer goes without saying.

But who knows, this could be the year they finally wake up and play like they can and have. I give it 50 50 at best that they will.

Another highlight for Carolina..

We blocked a punt! Our special teams is coming along. We also ran a kick back for a TD but it was called back.

Didn't quite make the top 10 this week..

Right on the edge at 11th. If we can pull the win off against Kentucky this week we should bust the top 10 wide open. Kentucky is ranked 8th! Notice anything else different about the poll?? LSU is ranked #1! I'm glad it happened, I think LSU is the best team in the nation and I'm glad the pollsters agree with me. We also moved ahead of UGA and rightfully so. Man, a win over Kentucky has never been this important..

Clemson is hanging strong at #22. Like you said bro, forget about the last game and focus on the rest of the season. There is a lot of football left to be played and Clemson is still very much in the ACC race. You guys also have a very important game against my Hokies this weekend. A must win for Clemson IMO. VT is going to try the samething as GT. They will be heavy blitzing. That is obviously Clemson's weak-point and for any team to beat Clemson this season thats what they are going to have to do. Harper is going to have his work cut out for him the rest of the season if the O-line doesn't improve..

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/appoll.htm

Shocker..

I don't know what to tell you guys. Clemson just didn't have it yesterday. Harper did what he could but he just couldn't handle the pressure. He also didn't have his RBs to fall back on. GT just took the running game completely out of the equation. Clemson had 34 yards on 32 rushes. The Clemson D also couldn't stop the run. GT ran for almost 200 yards. It almost looked like our game against LSU. You said that Clemson's D was on the field almost the whole game but they barely lost the time of possession battle. GT had the ball for 32:32 and Clemson had the ball for 27:28 so it was pretty even. Clemson's pass D looked ok but they weren't really challenged to much. Clemson's main problem was tackling. Overall, Clemson had their chances but the obstacle that I said they had to overcome to win the game, they couldn't overcome; the GT blitzing game. If Clemson's offense is set up for a blitzing defense, it didn't show yesterday. Spence has got to make some changes if he thought that was the case.

Carolina's offense looked pretty good yesterday against a pretty good defense. We had over 400 yds total offense. Smelley is shaping up to be the real deal. Our offense just seems to flow under him. He has done really well for a RS freshman QB and I'm excited about his future. We had over 100 yds rushing and probably would have had a lot more but Cory had a little knee injury. He is expected to be back for the Thursday night game next week. Mike Davis picked up the slack pretty well. Man, Mike is starting to show his potential. He is really turning out to be a great RB. Of course none of this could have been possible without a good O-line and our o-line played really well. Overall, good win for the Gamecocks..

There were a lot of teams in the top 20 to get beat yesterday. I'm not complaining one bit. The Gamecocks could move into the top 10 this week! I love it!

Hard not to think about what could have been.....

ACC did good for itself this weekend. With big wins over the SEC and Big East. Hell, most of the top 20 seemed to have lost.

Tigers would have certainly climbed into the top 10.

Whats so bad is not that they lost, its how they lost. Don't get me wrong, Ga Tech played good, Choice was certainly on his game. But thats not the story. They story is that a totally different Tiger football team showed up. Couldn't run block, couldn't catch a football. I knew that they would have to beat themselves this year and they did. Special teams, pathetic.

I feel the worst for Harper. I think he did what he had to do, but you can't do much if your recievers won't catch the ball.

I also feel bad for the Defense, they stayed on the field most of the night and still managed to hold them to 13 points. If you can't outscore a team with 13 points you are not going to win very often.

We should beat everyone on our schedule. If we play like that, we will lose most of the rest of our games.

Friday, September 28, 2007

Yes, but unfortunately calls that don't go your way (bad calls)...

Are a part of college football. It really sux when you are playing a team that you are not supposed to beat. Clemson has probably lost quite a few games dwelling on the last play instead of the next play.

It could be argued that the infamous 4th and 1 in our game last year was not a first down. I think it is safe to say that call won the game for you. But I won't take away from your win because of it. Clemson lost the game because the Cocks were able to run the ball over them. The Gamecocks played very well and the Tigers didn't. Thats what lost us the game.

The Cocks need to concentrate on what went wrong and not the refs. LSU was able to get almost 300 yds rushing. If a good team is able to run the ball on you like that you are probably not going to win. Its not the first time a team has been able to run the ball good on you. LSU is definitely the best all around team in the sec right now. But I would dare say there are other teams in the SEC that has better or as good running games. They need to concentrate on correcting that.

I dunno about Kentucky. Right now, in my opinion, Kentucky is the second best team in the SEC. They don't get to win alot and every game is going to be like the National Championship for them. Bad defenses or not, they have gained alot of confidence in their wins.

Talking about GT, oddly enough, the Tigers offense is set up for a blitzing defense. I think we would prefer that they do alot of blitzing. Certainly does fall in Harper's hands if they do, but so far that has been a good thing. Oh, he will get sacked a couple of times, but he hasn't been throwing interceptions (none so far) and its like Scott said, the offense is set up for big plays quick down the field. Blockers down the field instead of on the line. If he plays as he has so far, could get ugly early if they blitz like that. I think thats in fact what Spence is hoping for at this point.

I dunno, if Harper plays well, its a no win situation for opposing defenses. If you don't stack the box we will certainly run the ball over a team. If you do, Harper has been burning defenses down the field. Its all about how we execute on offense this year vs how opposing defenses try and stop it. Good situation so far and all in Harper's hand as expected, just not expected he would be playing this well so early.

Finally get to post..

Yea, the LSU game wasn't pretty. We did hold them to less points than anyone expected and scored more than anyone expected. We beat the spread by 4. None of it matters much because we still lost. I guess it mattered to the pollsters a little because we didn't drop much. We had opportunities to make it a game but didn't capitalize. We also gave LSU to many opportunities. The game was called pretty dirty and it shouldn't have effected the game much. Where it did effect us was in the mindset of our players. I think after a while the players were thinking that the officials were gonna give LSU everything they could and not give us anything. Could be wrong there but if I would have been a player for Carolina in that game thats what I woulda been thinking. Like you said though bro, you gotta move on and look towards the rest of the season..

Jasper is out for the season and that is a big blow because he is our best player and leader. I still think our defense will be fine but not quite as good. We are 2nd in the nation in pass D and that's all because of our secondary. Jasper says that he's gonna take the medical redshirt and come back next season rather than going pro. Who knows though, Rice said the same thing. I wouldn't blame Jasper if he went pro though. He is a senior and he deserves his shot at the big time. With Rice that wasn't really the case.

Our run D has really got to step up this Sat. MSU is a run first team and they are pretty good at it. They have a pretty good RB that can make things happen. A big win Sat. will give a lot of confidence to our D minus Jasper. I found out today that I may be going to the game. Ross asked me to go and I told him I didn't have the money. He said he would buy my ticket and he would drive if I went. Hard to pass that up. Dunno, we'll see.

Smelley is our new starter. I like the move. Our offense looked pretty durn good against the best D in the nation when Smelley was in there last week. Who knows though, Blake could get another shot like he did last season and look good in the last few games. You never know about our offense. That isn't necessarily good but it isn't bad either. It throws defenses off when they don't know what to expect from your offense. We gotta get better though and I think we will. A lot of young talent on offense right now..

Clemson should win big this Sat. The only obstacle they will have is GT's pass rush. I read somewhere that GT blitzes 88% of the time. That is unbelievable. I think Clemson should win in a rout as long as Harper plays like he's been playing.

Looking at the schedule, Carolina should be 7-1 going into the Tenn. game. We gotta beat Kentucky but I think we can. Kentucky hasn't faced a good defense yet. Hopefully our #2 ranked pass D will prevail against their passing attack. I think if we are not 7-1 going into the Tenn. game, we have lost one that we shouldn't have. Speaking of that, doesn't look like Clemson is going to lose one they shouldn't this season. If Clemson wins the ones that they are supposed to and lose the 3 toss-ups on their schedule, they can do no worse than 9-3.. Not to shabby..

Oh yea, we picked up a commit today. The 10th ranked player in the state of NC. He is a OLB named Reggie Bowens. He's 6-foot-2, 210 lbs. and runs a 4.5 forty. That's pretty quick for a LB. He's a 3 star right now but he could easily be a 4 star when the next rankings come out from what I hear. Good pickup in a position of need for Carolina.

Personal note: I joined an honor society fraternity today called Phi Theta Kappa. They may kick me out after this semester though.. lol.
