Notes from Spurrier on Carolina's first scrimmage

• No injuries

• Connor Shaw’s team scored every time he was in. Spurrier said he did everything he was supposed to. Got rid of the ball and threw it where he was supposed to.

• Demiere Byrd caught 3 or 4 tough catches. One was for about 65 yds. He led the WRs in yds for the scrimmage. Spurrier was surprised when they looked at the stat sheet and saw that Byrd only had 84 yds. He did a double take and said “I think he had more than that” which drew laughs from the reporters.

• Bruce Ellington ran the ball well out of the wild cat formation. He had a run for about 20 or 30 yds Spurrier said. Hasn’t threw a pass yet however. He caught a bunch of catches at the slot position and scored on one of them.

• Defense had no turnovers. Spurrier said “can’t get a pick can’t knock it loose.” This seemed to concern Spurrier. He did say the secondary played good coverage but just couldn’t get a pick. First team defense had a lot of sacks which leads to the next topic.

• Garcia took too many sacks. Something else that concerned Spurrier. Garcia did throw the ball well though.

• Spurrier seemed impressed with the RB corps behind Lattimore.

• Also impressed with the WRs behind Alshon. He talked about Byrd, Ellington, and KJ Brent the most. Spurrier is very high on Brent. Said he catches everything.

• Same goes for the TE corps. They had a good scrimmage.

• Again, Spurrier said “I think it would be great if Clemson joined the SEC.” The reporter asked why? “Because we would play them in a conference game, and they would be in our division. It would make for a bigger game. How’s that? I think it would be great but that’s just my opinion.”
