Smelling good in Columbia!

Why are things smelling good in Columbia, SC you ask.. the mans name is Chris Smelley. If Smelley is half as good as Spurrier thinks he will be, we Carolina fans should be really excited.

There was not one stop at a Gamecock Club meeting made by Spurrier that he didn't express how excited he was about Smelley joining the squad. Spurrier said at the Greenwood Gamecock Club meeting that redshirting Smelley isn't likely.

"I think and a lot of people think that (Smelley) has something special about him," Spurrier told the Greenwood crowd. "He can move around and throw the ball very well. He has a chance to be a big-time player for us."

The Ole Ball Coach isn't the only one excited Chris is aboard the Gamecock squad.. Chris himself is also pretty pumped up about it as well. So pumped up about it he recently requested a DVD from Spurrier containing the Gamecocks offense.

"I've been taking time and sitting down and going over it and learning the offense," Smelley said. "When I get to Columbia, I won't have to start from scratch. I will already have a sense of what to do."

So should Spurrier and Smelley be the only ones happy to have Smelley wearing the Garnet & Black? I don't think so, all of us Gamecocks should be.. especially after you check his stats, records, rankings, GPA, ect.

Chris was unbelievable as a high school Qb, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. He scored a good 30 on the ACT, and carried a 4.0 GPA his senior year. What about his play on the field you ask?? Well, I'll let the numbers speak for themselves.

He was ranked the #8 pro-style Qb by rivals.com, and Gatorade player of the year for Alabama after breaking a Alabama state record with 4,120 yards and 59 touchdowns during his senior season. Thats right.. that was only his senior season. Smelley demolished Brodie Croyle's state record for career touchdown passes with 134 (the 8th highest total EVER nationally.) His career passing yardage of 10,385 yards ranks second all-time in Alabama. His record during his final three seasons at his highschool was 39-3. His numbers speak pretty well huh?

Bottom line is, Smelley is a one of kind type of Qb that fits Spurrier's offense like a glove. I smell a SEC Championship being brought home to Columbia, SC in a few years!! What about you?
