In the more recent article he says he likes OL to train at 2 positions and mentions the backup center. Remember, each position on the line is one on each side except? That's right the center position, it's smart for example to have a LT train as RT also. Because your backup RT could very well be your 3rd best tackle and be expected to come on either side. Hence getting the best 5 on the field. Twice as many opportunities for tackles and guards than a backup center. I would say its very important for the 3rd string center to find another position because they are not likely to see the field. You will usually see 3 center, starter and 2 backups. A tackle and guard for example does indeed learn two positions, LT/RT and a guard learns RG/LG. It's ok when you see a backup center going to guard for example, but when you see them going to a tackle position you better start getting worried.
